The cloud means renting computing from a provider instead of buying and running machines yourself. AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud are the three largest.

The genuinely new part is not the renting, it is the granularity: you can create a hundred servers in a minute and destroy them ten minutes later, and pay for ten minutes.
